Inside the Window

In the last post I shared some train sketches of passing landscapes out the window, but you'll know I'm just as likely to be drawing what's going on inside the train carriage - i.e. the other passengers. Here's a few recent.

Before the rise of smart phones, there was a bit more variation of activity, and hence more interesting poses for obsessive scribblers like me - more people reading books/newspapers, writing, staring out of the window, or even talking to other passengers! Now it seems the majority spend journeys staring at little screens, such is the way of the world now.

On the plus side, my subjects tend to stay still longer, and are somewhat less aware that they are being sketched!

Then there are those passing the time dozing...

or multi-tasking, watching something on the little screens with additional headphones, or maybe streaming music.

Personally, I've never warmed to music streaming services, I opened a Spotify account a while back, but have never used it. I'm not against curated music - I listen to radio DJ's all the time, but they are human, some of who I deeply respect for their knowledge and range of tastes. I don't find much to respect about Spotify. With all the criticism of the platform adding to my reluctance, I just haven't really got on with it. Daughter has recommended more ethical streaming services that pay musicians and don't have ties to military tech, dodgy politicians etc., but even so, I'm slow to embrace.

Anyway, I digress. I'll be talking about music again shortly, just maybe on a new platform. I'm looking at some of the subscription newsletter alternatives to Substack, no decisions yet, but will report soon.
